For all others, they go straight to the Main Sequence stage. Only stars that are less than three solar masses go through the T-Tauri stage. A T-Tauri stage can last for 100 million years. It will eventually collapse and become smaller when nuclear fusion starts. During the stage, the star is variable star and is larger and cooler than the Main Sequence. This stage is when the protostar has cleared the surrounding dust and clouds but is not yet a main sequence. There is another stage of the Pre-Main Sequence that some stars go through, that is referred to as T Tauri, which is named after T Tauri, a young star in the Taurus star-forming region. Those that fail nuclear fusion are destined to become a Brown Dwarf Stars, which are cooler starts. Not all Protostars will become fully fledge stars like the Sun or Regulus for example. The Protostar will be surrounded by clouds and dust and therefore be hard to spot. Only when it has created enough mass can nuclear fusion begin in earnest. The mass it draws on is from the cloud and dust from which it was born from. A protostar is when the cloud collapses and tries to build up sufficient mass to start nuclear fusion. What causes a cloud to collapse varies from cloud to cloud. This area is also known as a star-forming nebula. Something will cause the cloud to collapse and begin forming into a star. There is no length of time a cloud can exist for. It is the first stage of a star that will become a Main Sequence star. It is roughly peaceful, and nothing is going on. Molecular CloudsĪ Molecular Cloud is a large region of gas and dust that could stretch for light-years. There are three pre-stages generally, all stars will go through these stages. These are the stages in the life of the star, which has not yet become a main sequence, one which is fusing hydrogen into helium. Betelgeuse is a post-Main Sequence star example. Larger, hotter stars are inefficient and will run out of hydrogen in millions rather than billions of years. Proxima Centauri, a Red Dwarf, will possibly last for trillions rather than billions of years. Smaller Main Sequence stars are more efficient at fusing hydrogen and will last longer than larger stars such as the Sun. At this point, life will no longer be able to survive on Earth and will need to move to another planet to survive. It is expected to move out of the Main Sequence in a billion years when it expands and eventually consumes the planets. The Sun is a Main Sequence Star, fusing its hydrogen supply into helium. When the outward pressures grow, the star will become a red giant star and become cooler. During theMain Sequence phase, the star will be stable, the inward and outward pressures are in equilibrium, but once it moves out of the Main Sequence, the outward pressures exceed the inward pressures causing the star to grow.
